Poor Jonathan Bing Can't See the King

Based on the poem by Beatrice Curtis Brown, this fun tale of a young boy who wants to see the King is truly a classic. The story uses several illustration techniques to highlight and even hide the fact that throughout the entire story-- Jonathan has his pajamas on! The King's Court makes comments on what items Jonathan is missing to make his wardrobe proper for a royal visit--like a hat, a tie, a clean face and matching socks--but never mentions the King couldn't possibly see a young boy dressed in his PJ'S. While the royal subjects can see the entire time that Jonathan has his pajamas on--the reader does not because of the illustrations which partially cover the PJ's and a distance device which shows the youngster close to the court in the beginning of the story and then after each of his return visits, farther and farther outward until Bing is outside by the moat! Poor Jonathan Bing can't see the King is a royal Hoot! Children will love to track Jonathan's progress to the castle (or lack there of) and will ultimately howl when they find out young Jonathan was never out of his colorful bed clothes in the first place!

Turbo and Tuxedo

A departure for Don, this book cries out for Impressionist watercolors. An urban tale of a young English Bulldog who would love to find a friend to share his daily walks with. A dog story for sure, but also a people story. A big city can be a lonely place but Turbo senses that a friend is out there for him--maybe just around the next corner. This short, sweet story is written for early readers, but can be enjoyed by all age groups. Follow Turbo through spring, summer, fall, and winter, as he searches for and finds a dog just like himself in the midst of the big city.
